UNIC Accra partners with Ministry of Women and Children’s Affair to sensitize youth on gender-based violence

Accra – 500 students from nine schools in Ghana’s Volta Region have been taken through the legal provisions on gender-based violence and what the youth can do to curb the incidence of violence against women.  They were also sensitized on the human rights implications for Ghana’s development as far as violence against women and children are concerned.  This was during a one-day seminar held as part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence observation in Ghana under the local theme “Peace in the World Begins from the Home, Let us End Gender-Based Violence Now”. “Stand up and take action against poverty” campaign in Ghana

Accra – 400 students from seven Junior and Senior High Schools to the stairs of parliament building at the State House in Accra to present a petition on Stand Up and Take Action against Poverty to the Speaker of Parliament. The initiative, which was planned by UNIC Accra was to remind the Government of Ghana of its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) commitment. Continue reading

Disaster Risk Reduction Day observed in Ghana

Accra – The theme under which this year’s Disaster Risk Reduction Day was observed could not have been any better in Ghana as school children dominated the event held at Adjenkotoku –Amasaman in the Ga West District of the Greater Accra Region. The theme “Making Children and Young People Partners for Disaster Risk Reduction” clearly reflects on the need to involve young people who are more and negatively affected by disasters because of their difficulty to cope with unexpected and painful interruptions to their lives.   Continue reading

Ghana’s Ministry of Information to help disseminate information on UN activities

Accra – Ghana’s Minister of Information, John Akologo Tia has welcomed the United Nations’ call for stronger collaboration to make information on the work of the UN system in Ghana available to the public. He expressed his gratitude to the UN for recognizing his Ministry as an important channel for reaching the people of Ghana and assured the UN that his Ministry will find ways to address the high cost of making available information on development issues to the public. UNIC Accra organizes press briefing on the 66th session of the UN General Assembly

Accra – UNIC Accra, in collaboration with the UN system in Ghana and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has held a press briefing on the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly. The event was attended by representatives/heads of some UN Agencies in Accra, staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and a cross section of the local media. UN Women convene high level meeting to address gender inequality in West Africa

Accra – A High Level symposium aimed at mobilizing region-wide support for innovative programmes and mechanisms for financing and sustaining responses on gender equality at national and local levels is underway in Accra. The theme of the symposium is “Sustaining Responses on Gender Equality in West Africa” and it is being organised by UN Women in collaboration with other partners including the Government of Ghana, ECOWAS, The African Capacity Building Foundation, Cooperazione Italiana and Trust Africa.
