Accra – The theme under which this year’s Disaster Risk Reduction Day was observed could not have been any better in Ghana as school children dominated the event held at Adjenkotoku –Amasaman in the Ga West District of the Greater Accra Region. The theme “Making Children and Young People Partners for Disaster Risk Reduction” clearly reflects on the need to involve young people who are more and negatively affected by disasters because of their difficulty to cope with unexpected and painful interruptions to their lives.
The Day was held outside the regional capital and attended by some Heads of UN Agencies led by the Resident Coordinator, Ruby Sandhu-Rojon and officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). The UN Resident Coordinator, Ms Sandhu-Rojon said the purpose of this year’s DRR Day was to encourage the participation of children and young people in disaster reduction and decision making and also shift focus from disaster response to prevention.
The Guest of honor, President, John Evans Atta Mills, commended the United Nations for choosing a theme with a focus on young people including children. He said it is prudent that we being to think of the children and young people in the decisions we take today.
Both President Mills and Ms. Sandhu-Rojon planted trees to mark the day.
